TONING

‘Toning is the simple and natural process of making vocal sounds for the purpose of balance. Everyone practices toning. When tired, we tone ourselves with a yawning sound. When in pain we tone ourselves with a scream or perhaps a moan. Sadness is expressed through the toning sound of crying and happiness is expressed through laughter.’

‘To be free to make sounds is an integral part of healthy functioning. Fully expressed sounds are powerful and effective balancing mechanisms. Imagine touching a hot iron and not making a sound. Without release of sound the body would tighten. Sound is necessary for restoring the body’s balance.’

‘Toning sounds are sounds of expression and do not have a precise meaning. In the process of learning language, most adults underestimate the importance of making spontaneous sounds. Children are excellent examples of uninhibited toners. They have a natural intuition and playfulness around sounds. Listen to children engrossed in play and you will hear a symphony of toning sounds.’

Yawning, grunting, groaning, whistling, screaming, sneezing, belching, whining, snuffling, moaning, panting, humming, signing, laughing, sobbing, cooing, yelping, crying, breathing, sniffling, gurgling, farting, clearing throat, gasping.
