LOVE OF KNOWLEDGE

An excerpt on philosophy from the book – Aristotle – written by Sharon Katz Cooper.

“The word philosophy comes from two Greek words: philo, meaning “love,” and sophia, meaning “knowledge.” So philosophy really means “love of knowledge.” It is the study of thought and existence. Philosophers ask “big” questions such as, Why are we here? What is our purpose? How do we decide what is right and wrong? What does it mean for something to be true or false? Ancient Greeks were the earliest Western philosophers. Socrates is generally considered the first of these. He was Plato’s teacher, and Plato was Aristotle’s teacher.”
